My Teenager is Officially a Pilot! + My #1 Advice as a Homeschooler

As a homeschooling mom, I'm always on the lookout for what my kid's gifts are...where they are naturally gifted, talented, and areas they are passionate in.

I feel it is a waste of time to invest tons of energy into an area one desires little in. For instance, could you imagine Beyonce stressing herself out trying to get an 'A' in advanced calculus in college? Probably not. Why? Because she and her parents knew she was meant to be a star. A singer. Not a calculus professor. And that's why she's the best in her field--she focused on her destiny, not dabbling in several areas.

"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid". -Albert Einstein

So while I'm no parenting expert (nor desire to be), I am an expert on my children. I invest in them each day observing them, listening to them, educating them. The biggest gift in this is that I can see who God is molding them into.

My oldest son, Eliel, expressed interest last year in aviation. He played some pilot games on Roblox and soon enough, he became obsessed. Then, I looked at his YouTube search engine history:

Pilot training. How to become a pilot. Day in the life of a pilot. Plane parts.

You get the picture.

So I sat Eliel down and asked him, "Are you serious about wanting to become a pilot? I'd like to support you in this if so."

His eyes lit up.

"Yeah, mom!"

I started incorporating aviation into our homeschooling. We'd go plane spotting as a family every week.

And what's been happening next has been nothing short of miracles.

On our last three commercial flights, each pilot offered Eliel a tour of his cabin and even let him touch some of the controls. Then we met amazing friends who own private planes and offered to help teach Eliel how to fly.

And what I'm most proud of is that my boy showed no signs of fear on his first adventure flying a plane...like none.

So today, I dedicate this blog to all the moms who are teaching their kids to believe in themselves and the power of their dreams.

Life is beautiful, and I'm honored to have the privilege to cheerlead the next generation.

xo,

Monica
