3 Tips to Rebuild Fitness Motivation as a Mom

If you've fallen off the bandwagon in terms of your fitness goals as a busy mom, chances are you are not lazy--you may just be overwhelmed, overstimulated, or burned out.

I've had the privilege to work with hundreds of moms one on one as a certified trainer and I love when I see the process evolve from "I don't know where to start!" into seeing clients thriving in their fitness routine.

So if you are struggling to have motivation right now in your fitness and health as a busy mom, check out my tips below to get back up and start crushing your goals again:

Despite popular POV posts on IG--we do NOT all have the same 24 hours in a day

Scroll on the 'gram more than a few seconds and chances are if you love and interact with motivational fitness content, you will see a post illustrating that we all have the "same" 24 hours in a day. I disagree. I focus on training moms specifically because once I became one, I realized I had to adjust my fitness goals to match my new lifestyle. When you're a mom, priorities inevitably shift. Now, I'm responsible for 4 humans, and my wellness goals. Since as moms our 24 hours looks very different (throw in diaper changes, sleepless nights, breastfeeding, investing love and attention into our babies) we need to adjust our expectations. Now as a mom of 4, my workouts mainly involve my children, and are at home, parks, trails, etc. We don't have to give up on our goals of being healthy and active as busy moms, but remaining flexible with our methods can help us stay motivated to keep going.

Redefine your why

My 'why' before becoming a mom and after has shifted drastically. My why is so much stronger now. I now have four kids watching me everyday. So when I consciously choose to lace up my sneakers and push play on my daily workout, I keep in mind I'm not just doing so to stay strong, continue evolving and live long, but I'm also planting seeds for my kids. They see mom caring for herself despite my busy schedule so they will subconsciously do the same when they are parents. In short, my why was predominantly about me before I became a mom. Now? It's about my legacy and modeling a healthy lifestyle for my family.

Use challenges to build resilience

When I have to pause a workout to breastfeed, grab somebody a juice box, change a diaper, or simply answer a question one of my kid's has, I use these "interruptions" to build mental resilience. Sure, I could use these challenges to quit for the day. Turn off the video. Try again tomorrow. But I mentally smile. Maybe it's the Goggins in me. But I know many people would use setbacks or inconveniences as an excuse to quit, but that's not us right? Sure, someone without kids and perhaps an easier life wouldn't have to deal with tons of interruptions or less sleep, but we as mothers can use this to build grit.

So no, I doubt you're lazy. If you've been struggling to stay consistent with your fitness goals, chances are you're just overwhelmed and overstimulated by life.

Whenever you need the reminder of your strength, power, and resilience as a mom, come back to this blog.

And to quote Goggins:

Stay hard!
